چکیده

This paper examines whether there is a causal relationship from job displacement to all–cause mortality. The hypothesis is tested for all employees who lost their job due to a plant closure in Sweden in 1987 and 1988. The control group is a random sample of all employees who did not experience a plant closure during the mid 1980s. Apart from variables commonly available in such studies (age, sex, type of job, education etc) we also have a number of variables measured for a period before the plant closure. These include health, income and labor market status. Preliminary results based on propensity score matching show some support for the hypothesis that displacement shortens life expectancy. JEL Classification: I12, J63, J65

The Echo of Job Displacement

Using a difference-indifference matching estimator, we found a rapid recovery after the displacement in 1987, with respect to both employment and un...
